Kapsali – Accommodation
Welcome to Kapsali, arguably the most charming hallmark of the island of Kythira. If Kythira is the island of Aphrodite, then Kapsali is undoubtedly her most radiant smile.
Nestled within two crescent-shaped bays, this village offers the perfect blend of a laid-back island vibe, a vibrant culinary scene, and a sense of history that meets you at every turn.
The Panorama: Where the Sea Meets History
The first thing you’ll notice in Kapsali is the dramatic contrast: the deep blue, shimmering Ionian Sea below and the mighty Venetian Fortress of Chora standing guard high above the village.
- The Twin Bays: Kapsali consists of two bays separated by a small peninsula featuring a lighthouse. One side is typically livelier, while the other is more tranquil—perfect for finding your ideal spot under the sun depending on your mood.
- The View from Below: In the evening, when the castle is illuminated, the backdrop transforms into a scene that looks almost too perfect to be real.
Beach Life & Local Flavors
Kapsali is the pulsating heart of the island, yet it manages to avoid the commercial feel of other Greek tourist hubs. Here, things still feel personal and authentic.
- Crystal Clear Waters: The beaches are made of fine pebbles and sand. The water is so clear that you can often see right to the bottom while sipping your morning frappé.
- The Promenade: Cafes, bars, and tavernas line the waterfront. It’s the perfect place to sample freshly caught fish, local specialties like Fatourada (a cinnamon-clove liqueur), or the island’s famous Paximadia (barley rusks).
- Nightlife: As the sun sets, Kapsali becomes the island’s meeting point. The atmosphere isn’t loud or overwhelming; it’s stylish and relaxed—ideal for a cocktail with a view of the moonlit bay.

Activities: More Than Just Sunbathing
For those who want to do more than lounge, Kapsali serves as a gateway to some of Kythira’s greatest highlights:
- Boat Trip to Chytra: Take a boat to the tiny rocky islet of Chytra. You can swim inside a massive sea cave in luminous blue water—a truly magical experience!
- The Cave of St. John: High above the village lies the cave where St. John the Evangelist is said to have begun writing the Book of Revelation before moving on to Patmos. The climb is rewarded with a breathtaking view.
- Hike to Chora: A beautiful, though steep, path leads you directly up to the capital, Chora. Stroll through the whitewashed alleys and catch the sunset from the castle walls.

A Little Insider Tip: Kapsali is at its liveliest in August. If you prefer a quieter experience, June or September are ideal—the bays are nearly empty, and the water temperature is perfect.
