How to get to Kythira

Getting to the Island of Kythira – You can reach Kythira via the Peloponnese peninsula by ferry from Gythio or Neapoli, as well as from Crete (Kissamos – Kastelli) and Piraeus. Alternatively, you can fly there from Athens!

Getting there by Car

My preferred route by car from the port in Patras to Gythio or Neapoli is to take the motorway to Corinth and then continue to Tripoli. In Tripoli, I leave the motorway and take the E961 over the mountains to Sparta, from where you can reach either Gythio or Neapoli.

Alternatively, you can continue on the E65 and turn onto the new section of the A71 at Megalopoli, which leads directly to Sparta. This route is 22 km longer, but significantly faster.

However, from a scenic point of view, the route via the E961 through the mountains to Sparta is the more impressive choice!

Tolls apply on the motorway.

If you have enough time, you should definitely visit some of the highlights of the Peloponnese, such as Olympia, Mystras, the Diros Caves, and Monemvasia!

For travelers flying to Athens from abroad, renting a car at the airport is a good option. An alternative route to the ferry port of Neapoli leads via Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nafplio, and Monemvasia, and is approximately 449 km long. At least one overnight stay should be planned in Nafplio and Monemvasia, as this route represents a journey through time from antiquity to the modern era!

Distances:

  • Port of Patras – Ferry port of Gythio approx. 330 km
  • Port of Patras – Ferry port of Neapoli approx. 400 km
  • Athens Airport – Gythio Ferry Port approx. 307 km
  • Athens Airport – Neapoli Ferry Port approx. 377 km
