Chora: The dignified protector of the South

Perched high above the sea and guarded by a massive Venetian fortress, lies Chora—the capital of Kythira. Strolling through its narrow, whitewashed alleys, you immediately sense the unique spirit of this place. Chora is no ordinary island village; it is a refined blend of Cycladic simplicity and Venetian grandeur. With its stately mansions, hidden gardens, and a commanding view of the Libyan Sea and the Cretan Sea, it is undoubtedly one of the most photogenic spots in all of Greece.

The Venetian Kastro: A Window into Infinity

The undisputed landmark of the town is the mighty Fortress (Kastro) dating back to the 13th century.

  • History You Can Touch: Passing through the massive stone gate feels like stepping back in time. Within the walls, you will find ancient churches, Venetian coats of arms, and historic cannons.
  • The “Balcony of the Mediterranean”: From the highest point of the Kastro (also called the “eye of Crete”), a spectacular panoramic view unfolds. Deep below lies the twin bay of Kapsali, the striking “Avgo” (or Chytra) rock rises from the sea on the horizon, and on clear days, the view stretches all the way to Crete.

A Labyrinth of Light and Shadow

The architecture of Chora is a delight for aesthetes. While the lower part of the village resembles the white cubic houses of the Cyclades, the upper quarter features grand mansions that bear witness to the prosperity of past centuries.

  • Mesa Vourgo: This district directly below the Kastro houses an astonishing density of small churches and Byzantine chapels, nestled closely together along the hillside.
  • Stroll and Linger: The central square is the beating heart of Chora. Here, locals and visitors mingle in charming cafes. In the main street (alley) leading to the fortress, you will find hand-picked boutiques offering local handicrafts, jewelry and the island’s famous honey.

Culture and Discoveries

A little secret hides behind every corner of Chora. For those interested in culture, the capital offers fascinating insights:

  1. The Archaeological Museum: A must-see for history buffs. It houses significant finds from all eras of the island, including the famous “Lion of Kythira.”
  2. Evening Walk to Kapsali: An old donkey path leads from Chora down to the harbor village of Kapsali—a magical experience, especially under a full moon.
