Agia Pelagia – Accommodation

Welcome to Agia Pelagia, the laid-back coastal jewel of northeastern Kythira. While Kapsali in the south is known for its dramatic vistas, Agia Pelagia charms visitors with its sense of space, tranquility, and the feeling of having arrived in the “real” Greece.

Formerly the island’s main port, the village has evolved into one of the most popular holiday destinations—all while maintaining its authentic, traditional character.

The Coastline: A Ribbon of Blue and Gold

Agia Pelagia is famous for its kilometers of coastline, where one bay follows another. Here, everyone finds their favorite spot:

  • The Village Beach: Located right at the doorstep of the local tavernas and cafes, the main beach offers fine pebbles and crystal-clear water—perfect for a quick dip before lunch.
  • Firi Ammos (North): Not to be confused with the beach of the same name in the south. This Agia Pelagia gem is famous for its reddish sand and deep, pristine waters.
  • Lorentzo & Lagada: For those who prefer a wilder setting, follow the coastal road north to these picturesque coves. They are often sheltered from the wind and are ideal for hours of snorkeling.

Culinary Delights & The Local Way of Life

Life in Agia Pelagia happens right by the water. The seaside promenade is the heart and soul of the village:

  • Fish Straight from the Boat: The tavernas here are considered some of the best on the island for fresh fish and seafood. Take a seat right by the waves and enjoy grilled octopus or lobster pasta.
  • Evening Stroll: As the light softens, the promenade fills with locals and visitors alike. There is a warm, family-friendly atmosphere—no stress, no rush.
  • Local Products: In the village shops, you’ll find Kythira’s famous thyme honey and handmade pasta (and of course, you can find the local Fatourada liqueur here too!).

Activities: Natural Wonders at Your Doorstep

Agia Pelagia is the perfect base for exploring the wilder northern part of the island:

  1. Kakia Lagada Gorge: A must for nature lovers! The gorge ends at the sea between Agia Pelagia and the north. It leads to the abandoned Byzantine capital of the island, Paleochora, which sits hidden on a rock overlooking the abyss.
  2. A Trip to Potamos: Just a few kilometers uphill lies Potamos, the island’s liveliest village. The Sunday open-air market is a sensory experience not to be missed.
  3. Moudari Lighthouse: A short drive takes you to the northern tip of the island, Cape Spathi. This lighthouse is one of the largest in Greece and offers sweeping views across the Aegean all the way to the Peloponnese.
  4. Karavas: Kythira’s “garden village” captivates visitors with its lush vegetation and cool freshness. In contrast to the barren coastal towns, Karavas is a place of springs (Amir Ali) and shady plane trees.

An Insider Tip: Agia Pelagia is the ultimate spot for sunrise lovers. Because the village faces east, the day begins with a spectacular display of light over the sea. It’s well worth waking up early at least once!
